Unveiling the History of the BBQ Cabin
Humans have been using fire to cook for more than half a million years. The pull towards a campfire is universal. I dare you to find me one person who is not entranced by the dancing flame of a bonfire. When fire and food are combined, the pull becomes inevitable. Often barbecues are combined with socialising, bolstering camaraderie and the human spirit. An arctic barbecue cabin is unique in that it brings the fire inside, to utilise cooking over fire in any season. This opens up barbeque-centric gatherings to be any time, not just when the weather is fair. We know now that humans have cooked food for hundreds of thousands of years, but where did this cabin barbecue hut come from?
Grillkåta in England
Our cabins are inspired by the long standing tradition of the Grillkota, kota or grill cabin. A Grillkota is a small building with seating surrounding a central fire pit. This structure became prevalent in Sámi culture, the indigenous people of Northern Norway, Finland, Sweden, and even parts of Russia. You may know of these people and their region as Laplanders from Lapland, but the Sami people have reclaimed the name Sápmi for this area. In particular the reindeer herders in Scandinavia used grillkota, as a communal area or for camping. The grillkota history is rich, and continues to grow with the design of a barbecue cabin expanding to other parts of the globe. The cabins are directly inspired from the founder’s wife, who is from Finland herself.
Rustic Simplicity Of A Cabin
Getting back to nature couldn’t be easier with a barbecue cabin. Not only is cooking over an open flame primal, but the construction of our wooden cabins is simplistic yet elegant. Our fans have described them as hobbit huts or fairytale houses. We think of them as the perfect nature retreat in your own back garden! Our wooden grilling cabins go up in one or two days (if you get a really big one). They are built with slow-grown Scandinavian redwood ensuring a long-lasting build. Unique to our brand is our signature (and trademarked) sloping walls. These sloped walls provide more interior space, and the iconic magical look of our bbq cabins. Each cabin comes with an accessory pack filled with Scandinavian treats, including sustainably sourced reindeer skins- bridging the connection to the Sámi people.
BBQ Cabin for All Seasons
Kota cabins endure due to their warmth, shelter, and ability to foster community around a central grill. They offer a timeless space for shared meals and connection, fitting right in the freezing wilds of Scandinavia or the mild English gardens of the North West.
