Beyond The Bubbles: Revealing The Hidden Tech Secrets Of Hot Tubs

The world of hot tubs is ever evolving - we’ve come a long way from the hot tubs of the 80’s. Water and bubbles was all that was needed back then, and while it’s nice to get back to basics sometimes, the technology arising in the industry is helping hot tub owners care for their water with greater ease, spend less on running their spas, and enjoy them without worry.

In this blog post we’re going to take a look at some of the latest hot tub technology and some cool things that are yet to come!

Tubs of Future Past

So when we talk about hot tub technology, what exactly are we talking about? A hot tub comes with a few standards that you could count as “technology”. Pumps, heaters, insulation, jets, controls. Updated versions of these technologies mean you can spend less time worrying about hot tub maintenance.

These items are a mainstay of hot tubs, and while they have always been integral to a spa they have improved dramatically over the years.

Pumps have become far more efficient in design, placement, and power - helping save money when it comes to running hot tubs.

Heaters and controls have allowed more customisable timing programs, detecting shifts in temperatures inside and outside of the hot tub and making heating more efficient.

Insulation has been studied and refined to improve heating efficiency while maintaining accessibility.

And we’ve come a very long way with controls, moving from clunky mechanical controls to colour touchscreens with all the information at your fingertips.

What’s New in Hot Tub Technology

Moving past the basics, the high tech hot tub seeks to improve the experience for the user in seen and unseen ways.

Ozone and UV-C have become very affordable additions to a hot tub or swim spa, helping sanitise the water alongside your sanitising chemicals. Ozone powerfully oxidizes contaminants like bacteria and organic matter, while UV light inactivates microorganisms by damaging their DNA. This combined approach reduces the need for harsher chemicals, resulting in cleaner, clearer, and more comfortable water with less irritation for bathers.

When it comes to the Hydropool brand, enhanced moulding techniques have allowed ergonomic and more comfortable hot tubs that are structurally strong and heat insulating. The jetting and plumbing has also been studied, to ensure the most efficient transfer of power from pump to seat, giving better massages.

On Hydropool Signature Self-Cleaning Tubs, Hydrotherapy Programming has been automated so that the massage required for your ache and ailment is as easy as pressing a button.

Certain hot tubs provide smart app integration to connect to your spa from anywhere in the world, allowing you to monitor your hot tub, change settings, and troubleshoot remotely. Hydropool’s smart phone integration even allows your local dealer to receive notifications about the hot tub, should you have any issues. Your dealer can then let you know to check the spa, or book you in for a visit.

What Hot Tub Tech Should Be Left Behind

One may think that a high tech hot tub would be riddled with lights and sounds. Too many lights may be fine for a party tub, but most people use hot tubs to relax. Being surrounded by tiny bright LEDs may negate the calming effect of a hot tub soak.

Looking Ahead for High Tech Hot Tubs

Hot tubs are becoming smarter with each new model released. One major step forward is going to be the integration of chemical testers inside the spa, doing away with the need for test strips or external digital testing kits. All of the sanitising and pH information will be displayed on the topside control or sent straight to your phone, alerting you of any changes and chemicals required. Beyond that, self-dosing hot tubs could become the standard one day, only ever needing you to refill a canister of chemicals every few weeks, all while the water cares for itself.

Signature Self Cleaning hot tubs are on the right track in the above regard, as we have inline chemical feeds that you can plunk a couple tabs of chlorine or bromine in and adjust the feed to put more or less into your water. In 2025, Hydropool now has access to a hot tub app that helps you care for your hot tub. In this you can’t control chemical content, but it can give you water care tips and alert you if you have any errors in your tub. Early access to leaks, failures, and air locks can prevent hefty repair fees!
