How To Create A Tech-Free Space In Your BBQ Cabin

Creating a tech-free zone in your backyard can be a great way to escape the constant buzz of technology and reconnect with nature. Here's a guide to help you create your own tranquil retreat using a new BBQ Cabin.

1. Choose the Right Location

Select a spot in your backyard that is secluded and offers a sense of privacy. This could be a corner hidden by trees or a cosy patio encircled with pot plants. Try to ensure the location is away from any distractions like busy streets or neighbours' yards. You’ll be inside the cabin anyway, so the location isn’t the most important aspect of maintaining your tech-free space.

2. Designate a Purpose

Consider the primary purpose of your tech-free zone. Do you envision it as a place for relaxation, personal reflection time, or family bonding? The purpose will guide your design choices and activities. Of course, a BBQ Cabin’s integral feature is the BBQ, it doesn’t always have to be used for cooking. Lighting a fire simply for the vibes is a great use of the central BBQ.

3. Embrace Natural Elements

Incorporate natural elements to enhance the ambiance of your tech-free haven. Carry the outside in with plants to create a serene atmosphere. Consider adding a water feature outside the door for added tranquillity. A hot tub (our best-seller aside from cabins) would be our first choice as a water feature, but you can find small fountains for a lower price point.

4. Introduce Comfortable Furnishings

Furnish your tech-free zone with comfortable seating options that encourage relaxation. Our cabin benches come standard with seat cushions, and you get a pack of reindeer skins with every cabin! But additional soft cushions, or bean bag chairs could be added if you have an extra extension for added space. Consider a deep padded sofa or armchair if you have the space.

5. Limit Technology Access

To maintain the tech-free environment, discourage the use of electronic devices within the designated area. Implement a 'no phones' or 'no screens' rule to encourage disconnection and mindfulness. You could have a phone lock box or simple basket to drop phones/devices in as you enter the BBQ Cabin. If your family has strong enough willpower you can set devices to silent. Consider giving a small reward for not using tech, like the choice of the next night’s dinner or a little candy treat.

6. Enhance with Sensory Details

Incorporate sensory details to enhance the overall experience.

For a relaxation focused space use soft lighting, scented candles, soothing music to create a calming atmosphere. Consider placing bird feeders to attract nature's symphony. You could add a wind chime or rain chain to the edge of the roof for additional soundscape.

For a family-time focused space add cosy blankets, board or card games, and maybe a mini fridge for juice and adult-drinks. With our bar extension, you get a metre of extra space with a built in bar. The perfect area for an after-dinner aperitif.

7. Encourage Activities

Introduce activities that promote relaxation and disconnection. Integrate a bookshelf and fill with books, colouring books and drawing materials, or puzzles to encourage engagement without screens. Make sure you have some adequately sized tray tables at the ready if you plan to make it a puzzle paradise!

8. Respect the Space

Establish clear boundaries and expectations for using the tech-free zone. Encourage family members, friends, and other guests to respect the designated space and refrain from bringing in electronic devices. With encouragement, it can be a unique experience for all!

Enjoy the Serenity of a Tech-Free BBQ Cabin

In today's technology-driven world, it's easy to get caught up in the constant stream of notifications, emails, and social media updates. Many people would agree that getting caught in a doom scroll is an easy way to lose hours of your life, especially if you have the “screen time” feature that tells you how much digital time you waste away.

It's important to take time to disconnect and reconnect with nature, yourself, and those around you. Creating a tech-free zone in your garden is an excellent way to remove oneself from the digital world. Create an all-season garden cabin escape for relaxation and rejuvenation. Your brain will thank you!
